This was a request for Kageyama and Yamaguchi who have
girlfriends that don’t like volleyball. I’m keeping them together in one post
since they were requested as such.
Tobio Kageyama
“Hey Kageyama, is _______-chan going to be there today?”
Hinata asks loudly on the bus as Karasuno makes their way to a small practice
tournament.
“Shut up dumbass!” the setter hisses but it’s too late.
“Oi, who’s _____-chan?” asks Tanaka leaning over the back of
the seat the weirdo duo are sitting in.
Before Kageyama can answer Hinata is already speaking,
“Didn’t you know? That’s Kageyama’s girlfriend!”
Silence descends for just a moment before all hell breaks
loose in the form of Tanaka and Nishinoya erupting into choruses of, “What?!”
and “How can scary face Kageyama have a girlfriend when we don’t?” and various
other such exclamations and bemoaning complaints.
“That’s enough!” shouts Daichi momentarily ending the ruckus
but even he’s incapable of stopping the flow of questions that follow.
“Where did you meet her?” asks Yamaguchi.
“Is she cute? Does she have a sister, preferably an older
one?” Tanaka interjects.
“Why didn’t you tell us about her?” This from Asahi quietly.
“Has she ever come to a game? Was she there in secret?” Even
Yachi is drawn into the fray.
Sitting still with his hands clenched and teeth gritting,
Kageyama fights every urge he has to strike Hinata and keeps his eyes out the
window. Noting his discomfort, Sugawara deftly thwarts further questioning by
saying, “Come on guys, it’s pretty clear he doesn’t want to talk about it. Lay
off for now, yeah?”
Finally, everyone settles back down just in time for them to
arrive to their destination. As they file off the bus Ukai, who’d gone ahead to
help prepare for the matches, notices Kageyama looks more annoyed that usual.
He knows better than to ask the setter directly and settles for talking to
Sugawara, the team’s proclaimed handler of the temperamental first year.
“What’s eating Kageyama?”
Sugawara sighs. “Hinata let loose the fact that Kageyama has
a girlfriend. I’m sure you understand how that went over.”
Ukai groans, rubbing his forehead. “Sometimes I really
wonder about that kid. Do you think he’ll be ok? He looks really…upset.”
The silver haired shrugs his shoulders. “Usually he picks
himself back up, though I can’t understand why he’s so upset. I mean, yeah, the
boys teased him but he’s had much worse dealt to him before. Want me to talk to
him?”
The coach nods and Sugawara makes his way to the locker
room. Almost everyone is ready and starts to head to the courts to warm up.
Just as Tobio shuts his locker door Sugawara says, “Hold on a sec Kageyama.”
The black-haired setter winces already figuring why his senpei is telling him
to hang back but he respects the third year and does what he’s told.
Daichi sends an understanding nod towards Suga and ushers
the rest of the team out as quickly as possible. Once they are alone Suga looks
at Kageyama with kind eyes.
“You know, you seem much more upset about what happened back
there than I would expect,” he begins gently. When his kouhai keeps his eyes
rooted to the floor he goes on, “I know you don’t like talking about things but
if you need to, I’m available to listen. And I won’t say anything to the team.”
After a few moments of silence Tobio spouts out, “I’m pissed
because I don’t know why ______-chan won’t come to anything I ask her to. At
least, when it comes to volleyball.”
Suga’s eyes widen. “You mean you’ve asked her to come to
stuff and she’s refused?”
Tobio nods. “Yeah and she’s always got some lame excuse as
to why. I… I mean…” he meets Suga’s eyes for the first time since they’ve
begun speaking, “Do you think she wants to break up with me?”
Sugawara has never seen Kageyama look so vulnerable. “He must really like this girl,” he
thinks with an inner smile. Ah, young love.
“Well, since I don’t know her I can’t say but I do recommend
asking her what’s going on,” he offers. Stepping up next to the first year he
places a hand on his shoulder giving it a squeeze. “And if she can’t be honest
with you, is she really someone you should be in a relationship with in the
first place?”
Tobio sighs, shaking his head.
“Talk to her tomorrow, but right now, get your head in the
game, ok?”
He nods before the two setters make their way to the court.
The next day you’re sitting outside at a lunch table eating
your bento when Tobio sits down heavily across from you, his normally serious
face looking even more so. Before you can ask what’s wrong he blurts out, “Why
won’t you come to any of my games? And why don’t you want to meet the team or
see us practice?”
As used to his abruptness as you are, his aggressive
interrogation startles you. Fixing your eyes on the table you gulp. Really,
it’s a miracle the two of you have even started dating given the fact that you
avoid or deflect any conversation or question about volleyball. You should have
known this would happen sooner or later but still cling to the hope you can
brush it off like you usually do.
“Tobio-kun, I told you, I’m just really busy and-“
He cuts you off firmly, “It’s not just that. It’s something
else, something you’re not telling me! What is it? Do you hate volleyball or
something?”
Tobio knows he should be handling the situation more gently
but he’s extremely frustrated. It wasn’t just that he didn’t want to answer the
guys’ questions yesterday, it was that he couldn’t. As blunt and obtuse as he
can be sometimes, he knew not to confess that you’d flat out refused to meet
the team, only having met Hinata because he caught the two of you saying
goodbye before Tobio headed to practice one day.
When you finally look up at him your eyes are hard, the
result of your effort to keep your tears from falling. You’d sworn to yourself
you’d never cry over this stupid sport again.
“And what if I do? Hmmmm?” you challenge and are satisfied
to see open shock on his face.
After a moment, he clears his throat and says more gently,
“Er…that’s…that’s fine if it’s really how you feel. I just…I wish I knew why?”
Kageyama is very aware that his passion (more like
obsession) with volleyball is rarely met by anyone else save for possibly
Hinata. He also knows that there are people who flat out don’t like the sport.
He just never expected to be dating someone from the second camp.
Knowing you’ve come too far to back out now you sigh,
closing your eyes. You can’t look at him while you say this, it’s just too
embarrassing.
“Tobio-kun, I’m sorry for frustrating you like this. And I
don’t exactly hate volleyball.” He
relaxes at this, but remains silent waiting for you to go on. “But I don’t like
it anymore. It…it brings back painful memories from junior high that I’d rather
just forget.”
When you open your eyes, you’re surprised to see him
regarding you with almost a kind look on his face. It’s rare to see him relax
from his normal scowl, usually only happening when the two of you are alone or
(and this is just hearsay for you since you’ve never been to a game) when he or
his team complete a really good play or win a match.
“Tell me, maybe…maybe talking about it will help,” he says
and surprises you again by reaching across the table to take your hand.
Squeezing his in return you halting tell him about how you
were made fun of because you could never manage to spike the ball. No matter
how hard you tried you just couldn’t do it, always afraid of hurting someone or
looking foolish. And since you weren’t good at anything else to take the place
of being a spiker your team slowly by surely began to think of you and then
call you worthless. You quit after your first year because of it but the stigma
of your failure followed you for the next two years so by the time you reached
high school you tried to convince yourself that you hate volleyball but it was
only a cover for the hurt you felt.
You feel his hand clench yours tighter at your words but
before you can say anything further he says, “I know what it feels like to have
your whole team turn their backs on you.” Your eyes widen at his confession. He
goes on, “I mean…with me it was my own fault, but still…I understand.”
“Tobio-kun,” you say softly, your eyes brimming with tears.
Before you can start crying he continues, his eyes downcast,
“And even though I’ve worked on changing and things are going well, that
fear…it’s never really gone away. I just work harder on the things I need to
and ignore it.” Looking back up to your face he says, “I…I’d really love to
show you how great a sport this is. It’s…it’s important to me and well…you’re
important to me,” here his cheeks and the tips of his ears begin to turn red
making you giggle as he goes on, “And…and I’d really like to have the two most
important things in my life…together.”
Giving him a genuine
smile you nod. “Ok, Tobio-kun, please take care of me.”
He actually smiles as he stands tugging you to your feet.
Placing a swift kiss on your cheek he says, “We’ll start with you coming to
practice with me to meet the team. They know about you now thanks to dumbass
Hinata so don’t be surprised if they kind of ambush you.”
You laugh as the two of you walk back inside and suddenly you
feel lighter having finally released the heavy stone of burden you’d placed
upon yourself, thankful for the boy next to you who helped you let go.
Tadashi Yamaguchi
“Where’s your girlfriend?” Kei asks bluntly to Tadashi as
they enter the arena for the Interhigh Tournament. The timid pinch server looks
around, returning Yachi’s enthusiastic wave with a small one. Then, realizing
she can help, he runs up to the stands.
“Yachi-san, have you seen _____-chan around anywhere?” he
yells.
The first-year manager shakes her head but offers, “I can go
look for her, maybe she’s lost?”
Not wanting to burden her, he insists it’s fine and no doubt
you’ll be there soon. Yachi looks doubtful but holds her position per his
request. Turning back around he begins practicing serves with the rest of the
team hoping you’ll arrive in time for at least one of their matches. The
whistle blows indicating the teams need to get into position and in no time at
all the first match has begun.
After the nail biting fight against Dateko with Karasuno
emerging victorious Yamaguchi looks up into the stands once more. He sees
Shimada-san and Takinoue-san have arrived to cheer them on but you’re not
there.
When the final point falls to Aoba Jousai ending Karasuno’s
run in the Interhigh, Tadashi doesn’t even bother looking for you. He knows
you’re not there. Part of him is glad, at least this way you didn’t see his
epic failure of a serve in his first ever tournament but the fact that he’d
told you well in advance about this and expressed his hope that you’d be there
to be met with not even a text or a call hurts.
The evening following the devastating loss Yamaguchi is
behind the market with Shimada-san discussing the game. When they’ve finished
determining the pinch server’s next moves the shop worker looks at him
curiously.
“The game isn’t all that’s bothering you, is it?” he asks.
Tadashi shakes his head. “I…I invited my girlfriend to come
to the tournament. She said she’d try to make it but…” he trails off never
taking his eyes off the ground.
Tossing the ball as he talks Shimada- san advises, “You
know, Yamaguchi-kun, one of the most important facets of any relationship is
communication. If you’re this upset that she didn’t come you need to let her
know.”
Yamaguchi sighs, running his hands through his hair. “I
know, it’s just that…it seems like any time I bring up anything to do with
volleyball…it’s almost like she’s tuning me out. I mean, I thought it was just
me picking bad times to talk about stuff but now, I’m not so sure.”
“The problem won’t go away by ignoring it,” Shimada-san says
firmly, “And since volleyball is a big part of your life that you’re taking
very seriously, I think you need to have a conversation with her about why
she’s avoiding it.”
Nodding Tadashi stands, bowing low to express his thanks for
the help and the advice of his sensei before heading to your house. If he
doesn’t do this now, he’ll never do it.
Knocking with a shaking hand he waits patiently for you to
come to the door. You open it, your eyes widening in surprise at his presence.
Usually Tadashi-kun texts you when he’s coming over. “Hey,” you say opening the
screen door and stepping out, “Everything ok?”
Taking a deep breath, he meets your eyes, a surprising
firmness in his gaze. “No, _____-chan, everything’s not ok. Do you…do you have
time to talk? Maybe we can go to the park?”
A sudden shiver runs down your spine. You have a feeling you
know what this is about and really you can’t blame him for being upset. Nodding
you reach back into grab your coat off the rack, calling to your mom that
you’ll be back soon and then exiting with your boyfriend. The walk to the park
is silent, both of you lost in your own thoughts.
When you reach your destination the two of you each sit on a
swing, turning slightly to look at one another. It’s one of your more favorite
places to talk.
Steeling his nerves, Yamaguchi looks up at your face.
“______-chan, I…I want to apologize.”
Now that is not what you were expecting. “What do you mean,
Tadashi-kun?”
“I…I’ve been very upset with you the past couple days but
really the fault is mine. When I said I’d love if you could come see us play
yesterday I shouldn’t have left it such an open-ended invitation. I wanted you there and was really
disappointed when you didn’t show up or didn’t bother to call or text me about
the tournament once.”
Before you can respond he holds up a hand. You stay silent
as he goes on, “It’s become pretty clear there’s some issue here and for some
reason it’s related to volleyball. At first I thought it was me just being
paranoid or oversensitive but I can’t hold this in any longer. Volleyball is a
big part of my life and if you don’t want to be involved with it that’s fine.
But will be you please at least tell me why? Or tell me if it is me and I’ll
work on fixing whatever it is I need to fix.”
You feel your eyes start to fill with tears. It’s just like
Tadashi-kun to take all the blame on himself even as he’s telling you that you
hurt him. And it kills you that you hurt such a sweet, selfless boy who you
know would give you the world if he could. Reaching out you take his hand and
squeeze.
“Tadashi-kun, you have nothing to apologize for. It’s me who
should be apologizing to you. I just…I thought I’d buried this far enough in my
past that it wouldn’t bother me anymore and that it wouldn’t affect our
relationship, but…obviously that didn’t work.”
Sighing you stand up from the swing and begin pacing in
front of him as you talk. “When I was in junior high I thought volleyball
sounded like a lot of fun so I joined the club team. Everything was going great
until we started practicing spikes.” Here you pause gulping down the lump in
your throat. “I…I just froze! The coach was yelling at me to run and jump to
hit the ball but I was too scared! What if I jumped into the net? What if I
landed wrong and twisted my ankle? What if I hit the ball into some girl’s face
and broke her nose and she hated me for the rest of our lives?”
Yamaguchi struggles to hold back his grin; he’s never known
you have Yachi-syndrome when it comes to worrying and he feels bad for thinking
you look adorable right now with your wide eyes and frantically moving hands as
you recall the memory.
You’re still talking and he forces himself to focus on your
words. “And then it’s like everyone just turned on me! Started calling me
names, saying they didn’t want someone so useless on the team, stuff like that.
So I just turned tail and ran out of the gym never to set foot in it again. I
vowed from that day on that I would avoid anything to do with volleyball.”
Here you stop and look at him, tears trailing down your face
as you hiccup, “And…and then I met you…the sweetest, most amazing boy ever and of course you had to love volleyball so
I just…I just tried so hard to ignore all the bad feelings I got but it was too
hard! Then I wasn’t sure how to tell you because I really, really like you and
I was afraid that…I don’t know…I thought maybe if you knew why you’d think I
was stupid or something. I just…I didn’t know what to do and now I’ve ended up
hurting you and you probably hate me!” By now he’s stood up and is holding you
close, your shoulders shaking under the weight of your distress.
“______-chan,” he says softly in your ear, “first of all, I
could never hate you. Secondly, I don’t care if you don’t love volleyball, you
don’t even have to like it. I just didn’t understand why you were so distant
about it. Honestly, I thought it was something I’d done because, if you haven’t
noticed, I tend to think things are my fault more often than not.” You nod but
he keeps going, “And if anyone can understand how you feel it’s me. I’m nothing
but the pinch server and even that I
couldn’t do right. But you know what?” He pulls back to look into your tear
stained face. “I got back up again, and I think you can too.”
You frown in confusion and he smiles, wiping your tears
away. “Who cares if you can’t or don’t want to spike? Why not focus on becoming
the best receiver on the team? Look at Nishinoya-senpei! He’s not even allowed
to attack and yet he’s one of the most important players on our team!”
He hugs you close again, kissing your temple. “All I ask is
that you try to move on so you don’t have to carry this burden anymore.”
You nod, hugging his waist tightly as you breath in his
scent. When you pull away again he smiles more widely. “Will you meet me at
practice tomorrow after you’re done with cleaning the classroom? We can go out
for ice cream afterwards.”
“Sure, Tadashi-kun, that sounds nice,” you reply taking his
hand as the two of you begin to walk back to your house. When you reach your porch,
you stand on tip toes and kiss him sweetly on the lips.
“Wha…what was that for?” he asks blushing. He’s still not
quite used to being able to be affectionate like this with you.
“That was a thank you, for being so forgiving and
understanding and for helping to pick me back up so I can move on.”
“You…you’re welcome,” he stammers, his hand behind his head.
Clearing his throat, he takes one step backwards down the stairs, stumbling
slightly but covering it up with a nervous laugh. “Well, then, I’ll see you
tomorrow at school and after at practice.”
“See you then, Tadashi-kun,” you reply waving as he walks
away. With a sigh you go inside, slightly nervous but looking forward to the
day tomorrow.
