#13 – First Christmas as a Couple
Bokuto’s knee bounces up and down, an outer manifestation of his inner excitement. This was it! His first Christmas with her!
But while he’s so happy she agreed to come with him to visit and meet his family, he can’t help but be a bit nervous. Knowing his mother, she’ll undoubtedly say something embarrassing, like how pleased she is he’s finally taking his future seriously.
He wishes they’d had a little more time together before this but he couldn’t wait to introduce her and Christmas seemed like the best time to do it.
What he hadn’t really considered was how many and the type of people who would be there. Like his uncles who don’t know when to stop with teasing or his cousins who are rambunctious and can be a little bratty and his dad…they just don’t always see eye to eye.
His palms start to sweat. How in the world did he think this was a good idea?
Next to him, _______ notices his expression go from excited to pensive to downright gloomy. After being friends with Bokuto since their third year of high school and dating him through their first year of university, she’s become fairly well versed in reading his moods, Akaashi having been a helpful interpreter when the need arose.
“Bokuto-kun.” Her voice draws his eyes to her face and she gives his hand a gentle squeeze. “It’s going to be fine. Don’t you remember? I’ve at least met your parents that one time at the Spring Tournament, so I’m not a complete stranger. I mean, that’s assuming they remember me,” she ends with a slight chuckle.
Bokuto turns to her, hand reaching to cup her face. “I don’t know how anyone could forget you,” he remarks.
The intensity of his eyes and serious tone make her heart skip a beat. She’s used to him teasing her, flirting, being a general goofball but this…this is something very new. Squeezing his hand again she forces a bigger smile onto her face. “Then you don’t have anything to worry about, right?”
He nods, drawing her close and dropping a peck to the top of her head.
They arrive to the station five minutes later, walking out of the train and see his parents waving to them through a window from inside the station. Despite his earlier trepidation, Bokuto’s face erupts into a wide grin, feet moving faster to get to them, ______ trailing slightly behind thanks to his longer legs.
“Mom! Dad!” Bokuto exclaims, hugging his mother tightly before reaching out a hand to his father.
Turning he gestures for _______ to come closer.
“Mom, dad, I’m sure you remember _______,” he says.
Looking at his mother, _______ can see where Bokuto gets his smile; hers is just as wide if more feminine. His father nods once in greeting, his stare making her shift slightly; Bokuto definitely gets his eyes from him.
“Of course sweetie! We’re so happy you could join us!” his mother offers, extending her arms and pulling the girl into an unexpected hug.
“Th…thank you,” she stammers, righting herself before bowing. “I appreciate you having me join you for the holiday.”
“We’re always happy to see Koutarou’s friends!”
“Um, mom, she…she’s more than just a friend. I….I asked her out a few months ago so we’re dating now,” Bokuto explains, hand rubbing the back of his head.
His mother blinks at him for a moment then rushes forward, flicking him in the forehead. “And you’re just telling me this now? Koutarou!”
“Sorry mom, sheesh, I just…I wanted to tell you in person!”
“A likely story,” she grumbles but offers another smile to _______ as she loops their arms together and drags her towards the exit. “Well now I’m even more happy you’re here dear! You always struck me as a sensible young woman! No doubt you’ve been a great influence on him.” ________ blushes heavily, unsure how to respond to such praise. “Now, let’s get you two home out of this cold and I’ll show you all of Koutarou’s baby pictures, he was just the cutest little owl!”
“MOM!”
