Why notes matter

I’m sure a lot of readers who may not happen to be content creators are wondering, “Why are the admins/writers of blogs I follow freaking out over “best stuff first” and notes?”

It’s because notes tell us how you feel about our writing. Likes, reblogs, comments, DMs, ALL of those things are the lifeblood of our work. Sure, there is a part of us that writes just to write because it’s fun and we love the characters/shows that we choose to indulge in.

You know that feeling you get when a writer answers your ask? That flood of “oh yea, I’m so excited to read this!” That’s how most of, if not all of us, feel when we get notes, ESPECIALLY reblogs! Bonus if you have fun tags or add a note saying why you love the post, that you love the post, ANYTHING is like life/muse infused water.

But when we put content out into the world and no one responds or barely does, it stings. It makes us doubt ourselves and our work and wonder why we’re trying SO HARD and putting in so much effort if no one is even going to read it or take that little bit of effort to let us know how they feel about it.

It’s so discouraging for me, a blogger who is one away from 1800 followers, getting barely 10-30 notes on any given post. Unless my work totally sucks, that just isn’t right.

That is 1.6% of the people who follow me letting me know what they think of my work.

So, in cold hard black and white that means 98.4% of my followers either didn’t see the work, didn’t read the work or didn’t like it.

If you don’t like it, that’s fine, I’m sure that’s going to happen. I don’t even mind if you respectfully tell me so and if you’re feeling extra generous tell me how you think I can improve.

But the feeling of being ignored or of failing so hard no one wants to even bother telling you, it sucks.

So yes, notes matter, likes matter, reblogs matter, comments matter, ALL OF IT MATTERS to us as content creators.

And it’s not just Tumblr where reader/creator interaction is missing. Fanfiction.net, AO3, Wattpad, Deviant Art, I’m sure all of these places are suffering from the same lack of reader/consumer interaction.

We’re doing this for free (most of us, if you do commissions awesome and I wish you best of luck and it’s great people are willing to pay to get more).

So please, if you want more content, please think of your words of encouragement, thankfulness and just general opinion as the currency.

We provide words of imagination, fantasy, fun and indulgence.

Will you, dear readers, consider “paying” us with words of thanks and encouragement and/or in reblogs and likes?

Counteract Best Stuff First

This is a content creator hell. Anyone starting out is going to get so discouraged so fast. It’s hard to tell exactly how much this has affected me personally because I’ve recently had to take a break but coming back will be that much harder when it feels like no one is reading my work.

Oh wait. They WON’T because I’m not a “best stuff blog”.

Until @staff removes this completely unnecessary “feature” please consider turning on NOTIFICATIONS for your favorite blogs. I don’t care if it’s not mine.

All users on this site deserve the same opportunity to been seen and heard and this is killing that outright.

Let Tumblr @staff know if you want this removed permanently or at least switched to an opt in rather than an opt out feature.

Hopefully with enough dissenting opinion they’ll actually listen and do one or the other of the above options.

Not all popular content is good and a lot of exceptionally talented creators, motivators, whoevers are going to miss out on the exposure and interaction Tumblr USED to be known for.

Please, make your voice heard and tell Tumblr to remove this.

Please help other blogs by turning on notifications.

PLEASE REBLOG POSTS YOU LOVE!

Let’s scream about anime!

Hey all, I know I just did a post but I wanted to re-iterate separately that I LOVE hearing from you all even if it’s just to chat, so please, send me your favorite animes, characters, why you love them, or anything else you want to chat about.

I’d love to get to know you guys (even through anon). You’re all important to me and hearing from you is great!!

Who is your favorite from Yowamushi Pedal?!?! (I love that anime so much and the fandom can be a little hard to find, so I’m glad you said that you like it too. Kaburagi’s my personal favorite.)

I’m surprised it’s hard to find because the anime is SO GOOD and they’ve been out fairly recently.

Anyway, to answer your question, oh my gosh that is a hard one! I love so many for so many reasons (which is the bane of most of sports animes honestly).

But I have to say my favorite is Makishima. I just adore him. He’s cool but awkward at the same time and his hair is amazing lol.

I especially love how he comes a bit more out of his shell to Onoda (another favorite, honestly their friendship makes my heart warm).

I forgot to mention, I haven’t finished the current season of New Generation because I want to wait until the new season is released next year. I get so spoiled being able to binge watch full seasons but I’m super excited that they’ll be continuing.

Why is Kaburagi your fave? And thanks for reaching out!

Anon comments

These two comments came
from the same person who wishes to remain anon but I couldn’t not share their
wonderful words and thank them publicly. These are the types of things which
keep us writers writing!

Thank you for letting me know! I’m sure that
I’ll love it, your writing is always great 😀 Just like the latest Kasamatsu
one-shot you wrote btw, 1000/10, would read over and over again and I’m not
even any huge fan of him
👌

I’m so pleased you
enjoyed it! It’s very flattering to know I’ve written a character well enough
to be enjoyed by someone who isn’t even a big fan of said character!

Hello, I just wanted to thank you A LOT for
this Imayoshi scenario you wrote, it was absolutely fantastic and I love it
with all my hart now. The way you portray him is so great, so IC I couldn’t
possibly wish for more, plus you hit me hard with Hanamiya feels there and
since I love to suffer so it was just
👌 Thank
you once more, you’re an amazing writer
Wish
you a lot of motivation!

Thank YOU a lot for
telling me! I get nervous writing him because he’s so clever and…cold? Like,
writing super emotionally controlled people can be a challenge for me, but I
really like Imayoshi and so to be told I portrayed him well and in character
put me over the moon! I’m also glad you felt I wrote Hanamiya correctly, he’s
another tough one for me to personify appropriately. Thank you so much for your
kind words and encouragement, they contribute heavily to my motivation!

hello! how are you doing? i hope you can give me some advice/tips? i was wondering how you manage your time, because I also run a scenarios blog but it’s really hard for me to write or finish stories. but you always manage to post request and come up with different events like, and you have a life outside tumblr. Also how do you feel about your writing and what do you do when you can’t be satisfied w/ your work? I’m insecure about mine so I need some advice, thanks for your time :)

Hi sweetie! I hope I can help.

First of all, and this is a little embarrassing to admit, but my
life outside of this blog is not too complicated. I mean, yes I have one but
mostly my day to day existence consists of getting up, going to work (being an
adult, boo!), coming home and either writing or if I’m dead exhausted binge
watching Netflix, playing video games, reading or sleeping. Not that any of
those things are wrong, I just yeah, not too much going on (although somehow I
feel I’m busy, but I digress).

So, as far as managing my time, I don’t really have a set
structure for that. I usually leave it as a goal to at least write SOMETHING
every day (even if it’s just an outline) but even that doesn’t always happen. I’ll
probably be better able to answer that question after my events because DAMN I
filled my plate but I didn’t want to leave you hanging that long.

I’m a full fledged adult
(boring I know) so I no longer have homework, projects or sports occupying my
time. Truthfully, it would probably be better to fill my time with more “outside”
things but I’m enjoying my hermit time. That being said, it makes it a little
more challenging to answer the question of time management because my time is
taken up I’m sure by very different things than yours.

So, what I’m trying to say I
suppose is, the issue of time management isn’t really a cut and dry question.
Writing for a scenarios blog is pretty much a hobby and a hobby, since it is
not obligatory, is easy to fall to the way-side when other things crop up.

Just don’t beat yourself up
about being busy and responsible. Write when you can write, there’s nothing wrong
with that.

As for the issue of just
getting to writing or finishing stories, you could ask yourself a few questions.
Are you tired? Do you not have inspiration? Maybe struggling with writer’s
block? Are your other responsibilities impeding on your writing time? Is there anything
you can let go of in favor of writing?

I try to make consistent use
of the queue option so that I have content posting every day (even multiple
times) without me needing to be there. But, of course, I have to generate the
content for that to happen which leads into your next questions about how I
feel about my writing and what to do when I’m not satisfied with my work.

Overall, I feel good about my
writing. I started out writing multi-chapter Bleach fics so I have generated A
LOT of words over the past year and a half. Even before getting into fanfiction
I had a strong vocabulary, read a lot and was able to express myself coherently
through both written and spoken word. That being said, I’m also pretty critical
of myself and try to improve when and where I can.

If I really am just not
satisfied with something I write, I just let it sit for a bit, even if someone
is waiting for it (request wise). I’d rather they wait and get something I’m
confident about than just “anything”. If I go back to it and really still don’t
like it, I’ll start from scratch. It sucks but I’m usually happier for it.

Here is a link to a post I
gave full of writing tips that may be helpful as well.

As for your work, what are
you insecure about? The ideas? The vocabulary? Grammer? Structure? Try to pin
down what about it is bothering you and then research how to fix it. I mean,
for scenario blogs the standards range vastly and you’ll probably be surprised
by how much someone LOVES something you think is ‘meh”.

I hope this helps and if you
have any other questions or even want to reach out to me on DM off anon, I’m totally
open to that.

Don’t mind me, just spamming your notifs because I love this blog~

serves-up:

❤️❤️❤️ Thank u!! I don’t mind at ALL pls like/reblog to your heart’s content.

Re-blogging for a reminder that pretty much ALL writers and artists probably feel this way.

WE DON’T MIND NOTIFICATION SPAMMING BECAUSE IT MEANS SOMEONE ACTUALLY CARES ENOUGH TO TELL US THEY LIKED SOMETHING OR MANY THINGS AND THAT MAKES US HAPPY!!

Ahem, I’ll stop yelling now but seriously, feel free to like, re-blog and comment the hell out of our stuff, it makes us grin like fools and fills our hearts with encouragement to keep going.

Want more content? Make sure you comment!

Do you have any writing tips? Because I really love your writing style and I’m trying to improve mine :3

First off, thank you for the compliment, both on the fact
that you like my writing and that you would ask me for tips. That is definitely
high praise indeed.

The first thing is just
keep writing. Now, that may sound odd but the phrase practice makes perfect
wasn’t said for nothing. The more you do something, the better (hopefully) you
will become because you will grow the existing skills you have.

Read…a lot. And I’m not just talking other imagines, though
that does help. Read books, read multi-chapter fanfictions of your favorite
shows, read different genres of stories to help glean their tones. Often there
are multiple tones which can occur in a story even if you have a centralized
theme (romance, horror, etc) so having a pile of inspiration to draw from is
helpful. Also, re-read stories you love with the intent to pay attention at how
you’re feeling, what you’re seeing in your mind. Notate what about the story
draws you in and think how to emulate (not copy of course) that in your own.

Keep a journal or notebook (paper and electronic) to write
down new ideas, plot points, dialogue, scene set up, etc. Inspiration can hit
at almost any time and it really sucks to have a GREAT idea or to work out a
plot point that was giving you trouble only to forget it later because you didn’t
write it down.

Get your ideas out but try not to critique too much as you
go. Some of that is fine because you don’t want to create double work for
yourself when editing. But I find that sometimes when I’m paying too much
attention to finer details I lose my overall focus of what I’m trying to say.
So instead, I just write what’s in my head and allow myself to worry about
trimming it down later. This works for me, it may not for you or others and truthfully,
I don’t do it all the time. But when I allow myself the freedom to just write sometimes I find my best stuff
comes out because I’m not overly criticizing it as I go which can stifle
creativity very quickly. I hope that made sense.

The above leads into the next: Re-read your work repeatedly. The first time, look for
grammatical, spelling, punctuation, and tense errors. Clean up the mess
(because it happens to all of us).

After you finish editing as above, step away from what you
just wrote and let it sit. I don’t always follow this because I get impatient
with myself but when I do manage to I’ve found my writing is of a higher
quality. If you can let it sit for a whole day without revisiting it, it gives
you a chance to read it with fresh eyes when you go back.

Now, after you’ve let it sit, if you’re working on a
multi-chapter, read the previous chapter and go right into the next. Check the
flow and makes sure everything makes sense. Does it feel choppy? Too wordy? Not
enough description? Too much description? How does the dialogue, feel/sound?
What can you do to convey your message as cleanly and simply as possible?
Writing with great description and detail is fine but our brains are really
good at filling in gaps using our imagination. We don’t have to spell
everything out.

When doing the second read through, if something feels like
it doesn’t fit or may fit later or you even wonder what the heck you were
thinking, don’t delete it. Open a separate
word doc and take what I call the scraps and put them there. Label however you
need to in order to remember what they are for. I usually have a scrap doc open
for any story I’m writing and use it only for that story. If I start a new one,
I open a new scrap doc and use it. This way, if you came up with a really great
scene that just didn’t feel well placed in one part of your story, you already
have it ready to go for the next. I’ve even had lines of dialogue that felt
more appropriate for later in the story and just hung onto them until I could
use them.

Finish your cut and paste then let it sit again if you can.
Again, this is to allow your brain time to step away from what you’re so close
to so that when you read it one last time you’re not filling in gaps or
glossing over errors because your brain is supplying the answers and your eyes
aren’t able to see them.

If you have someone you can trust that will give you honest
feedback, ask them to read it. Take their opinions and apply changes where
necessary. I have one person I bounce stuff off of and it helps me a lot. If
you don’t want to have someone you know personally do it, seek out a beta
reader.

Don’t give in trolls, just don’t. If someone has something
constructive say, listen with a grain of salt because you CAN’T PLEASE
EVERYONE. I stress this because I have to remind myself of it often.

The biggest thing to remember is: have fun. Writing like
this, while challenging, is supposed to be fun. It’s an indulgence to explore
options for characters you love so make sure you’re enjoying it!

I hope that answers your question and isn’t too
overwhelming. Everything I described above can be used for imagines/scenarios
too and your blog will stand out if you apply them. Thanks again for following, reading and reaching out. I’m
happy to help if you ever have any more questions. You can send an ask or DM me
if you like.
