A hundred years later, I finally write this one! I hope you like it!
You never knew your pulse could beat so loud, the thunder of it in your ears drowning out all sound. Around you, the bustle of people starts to slow; they’re noticing, pointing with giggles and delighted gasps at the display before them.
Terushima shifts slightly, his knee no doubt feeling the bite of the uneven concrete but he remains knelt, hands outstretched and fingers clasping a box—red in color and velvet in feel— in which lies a sparkling diamond ring.
Tears prick your eyes and you curse them—curse him—because he would have to put you in this position in front of strangers. Perhaps you should be thankful it’s not in front of friends.
“Terushima,” you say and see him start, his wide smile falling slightly at the use of his last name; no wonder since you’ve been together for nearly two years.
Actually, it has been two; today’s your anniversary.
You swallow the lump in your throat and begin again, “I… I can’t accept.”
Terushima stares at you for a moment then lets out an obviously forced laugh. “Haha, good one, _____!”
You ball up your fists. If he wants to do this here, fine.
“Asking me to marry you doesn’t change the fact you cheated, Terushima.”
That wipes the smile clean away. He face falls and he scrambles to his feet, tugging you to an alley.
Then he’s down again—this time on both knees—and tries to push the ring on your finger. “Please, _____, please don’t. That was a mistake. It didn’t mean anything and—“
“But it does mean something. It means I’m not enough for you!”
Terushima crumbles, leaning back on his heels, his head down. You’re not sure but you think he’s crying which makes you cry more but you have to do this; you have to be strong for yourself.
He looks up, tears rolling down his face and you choke on your breath.
He shakes his head as you stretch your hand towards him and say, “Buy yourself something nice. Because I don’t want this ring.” You release it, unwilling to stand here any longer with your torn heart on display.
It falls to the ground with a clink, rolling slightly away but he makes no effort to get it as you stride past him and disappear into the crowd.
