I did this as headcanons, hope you enjoy (sorry there is some melancholy at the beginning).
- Growing up, Kageyama’s parents were always busy with business (traveling) so he got used to being alone most of the time, even during the holidays.
- This changed somewhat during his Karasuno years but he still woke up alone on the day of.
- When he married you, he grew to appreciate the holiday as a romantic one, thankful you didn’t press him too hard, too fast and let him ease into new habits without guilt tripping him.
- The first Christmas with your children being old enough to know what the whole deal was about was very overwhelming for him.
- The noise, the clutter, the crazy, all of it hit at once because everyone from your family (and his he was shocked and maybe just a little bitter to see) wanted to be there for gift giving. Apparently children make the festivities more fun.
- You noticed right away of course and drew him outside despite the cold and around the side of the house to a quiet shadow where you held him and he held you and he could breathe.
- He apologized but you shushed him, citing your over frayed nerves as the reason for the respite but he knew better.
- Eventually, your children found you, tapping at the window and making silly faces at you both to make you laugh. It worked.
- The next year things were better. Family time was better scheduled and breaks in between visits allowed the four of you to enjoy the holiday without ending up exhausted.
- You even hosted a Christmas/reunion party with as much of the Karasuno gang as could make it, their spouses and children in tow at a private cabin owned by Kageyama’s teammate.
- The kids ran around in the snow to get their wiggles out before everyone headed inside to warm up by the fire with hot cocoa and steamed buns.
- Surrounded by his friends turned family Kageyama smiled and he tucked you into his side, pressing a kiss to your temple. Christmas had become he favorite holiday.
