okay I didn’t answer this immediately bc I really had to think of a response? I kinda went on a tangent here :p but I think what I’m saying is pm entirely true.
Although I really appreciate the fact I have so many followers, here’s the issue. I’m not getting close to half or even 100 of my followers reading my work. I did the math, and with my averages I am getting around 2-7 percent of my followers actually liking and reblogging my stuff. Notes aren’t entirely what I write for, anyway, however, it is kinda disheartening to only receive such a small amount of follower interaction. And a lack of notes is what contributes to the kinda “death of a fandom” anyway, if you get what I mean? There are many fanfiction blogs that give up when they assume others don’t like their work, so it’s best to at least throw in a like or nice comment to encourage blogs. It may seem like such a minuscule thing, but it really validates that everyone is seeing/enjoying our stuff.
I think the problem lies within the age range of most audiences? Like my stuff is directed towards older audiences (not that younger people don’t read my work) and older audiences don’t seem to be very involved in “feedback culture” but if you look at things written by younger people for younger audiences, it gets a lot of feedback and stuff? I assume it’s because younger people don’t view fanfiction and stuff as “cringy” like some older people do? Idk man. Just a theory.
Notes aren’t important because they “make me popular” or anything like that. I just enjoy knowing my followers are actively seeing what I post and enjoying it. Posting something and receiving no criticism (positive or negative) in return is really confusing and discouraging. I love hearing feedback despite it being positive or negative.
TL;DR: This probably isn’t a problem you can fully relate to unless you’re a content creator yourself. In my opinion, followers don’t owe me anything, but it is nice to hear back from you guys. Follower interaction (Anything from just saying hey to chatting about hq or whatever to talking about my writing) is the highlight of running a blog, and the new tumblr update really suppresses that. It’s evident that lack of notes/motivation kills blogs (I mean just look at how many hq blogs have gone inactive). Just whenever you can/remember, don’t be afraid to show your faves some love!
