You’ve
spent seventeen years living like an average person, the outline of
your existence shifting through times both good and bad. Yet, it
feels as if you’ve lived your life on fast forward, like you’ve done
too much in too little time, and now you’re supposed to know all the
things that come with being an established adult—like you’re
supposed to know what you want to do with the rest of your life.

It
starts when you stare at the wall opposite you, heart pounding as
awareness creeps into your conscience; the only thing that breeds
certainty, like the static in your veins, is that you want him.

You
spend two weeks getting to know him, and two weeks trying to forget
him.

It
takes a month of self-persuasion to believe that you’ve given up on
him.

And
only seconds to realize that you’re lying to yourself.

You’re
sitting behind a desk when he comes in, eyes concealed by a mop of
hair and a grin on his lips. It disappears behind the sticky
transparency of bubblegum, snapping between the edges of his teeth as
he makes his way over to you.

There’s
arrogance in each step he takes, his stature carrying the promise of
arguable egotism. You busy yourself with a stack of papers,
disinterested in whatever he has to say, because nothing good ever
comes from boys who wear iniquity likes it’s the season’s latest
fashion trend.

He
ignores you in favor of plucking through the contents on your desk,
humming quietly to himself. The fact that you can’t see his eyes
makes you uneasy for a reason you can’t entirely explain. Then he’s
looking at you, muttering a pitiful pickup line that you try to
forget the minute it spills past his lips—but then he’s telling you
that you’re pretty, and for the first time in your life you feel
desirable. The spark of excitement lasts only a minute, but the
memory remains, sticks with you like the sugary sweet candy clinging
to the shape of his mouth.

When
he leaves you tell yourself it holds no real meaning, that he’s
probably toying with you—but you’re knocked sideways when he turns
around and flashes you a bright smile, one you didn’t know he was
capable of producing.

You
don’t know it then, but a part of you falls a little in love with him
right there.
